types of faucet
A guide to the four types of faucets( ball, disc, cartridge and compression):
Ball Faucets (Handle Type: Single) - Common in kitchen sinks, the first type of washerless faucet. Identified by their single handle which moves over a rounded ball shaped cap. The plastic or metal ball inside the faucet body and under the ball shaped cap has chambers or slots in it which control the flow and mixing of water temperature. They have several parts and tend to leak more than other washerless faucets.Disc Faucets (Handle Type: Single) - The most recent development in faucet technology. Identified by a single lever over a wide cylindrical body. Disc faucets have a wide cartridge housing two ceramic discs which slide over each other to control water flow and mix temperature. These faucets are high quality, are very reliable and do not need repair very often. An excellent choice for replacing an older single handle faucet.
Cartridge Faucets (Handle Type: Single or Double) - Operate with a movable stem cartridge that moves up and down to regulate flow. Identified more by how they feel rather than how they look. Unlike a ball faucet that you push back to turn on, single handle cartridge faucets operate in an "up/down" motion to adjust water volume and a "left/right" motion for temperature. Two handle stem cartridge faucets look nearly identical to compression faucets. The difference is in how the handles feel when used. Compression faucets require you to tighten down the washer to close the water flow. With a cartridge faucet, the action is consistent. The faucet turns off without added pressure being required. A good choice where double faucets are needed.
Compression Faucets (Handle Type: Double) - The most basic and oldest design. They are found in older and in some new homes to this day. They are generally the least expensive and most prone to leaks and maintenance. They use separate hot and cold water handles and require you to tighten the handles down to shut off the water flow. Compression faucets work by using a compression stem with a washer at the end of it pressing against a valve seat. If the washer is not replaced when worn, damage to the valve seat occurs, requiring replacement of the faucet.
